We will write a custom essay sample on The Yellow Wallpaper Reading Response or any similar topic only for you Order Now The setting of this story takes place during the summer in a rented home that John has acquired so that the narrator may rest and get well again. The story takes place about the time in which it was written, in the late 19th century. The house is a colonial mansion, which our narrator quickly tells us she thinks is haunted. It is in a rural setting surrounded by gardens and woods with ââ¬Å"a lovely shaded winding roadâ⬠leading up to the mansion. The main setting, which the narrator describes, is the room in which she stays. She goes into explicit detail as she carefully describes the yellow wallpaper which consumes more and more of her attention. The wallpaper becomes a moving prison to our main character, while other characters, like John, barely seem to notice its presence. There are not many characters in this story, but each one plays a vital role in giving the reader insight into the mind of the writer and allowing the reader to come to a deeper understanding of the meaning of the story. Jennie, a flat character and foil of the main character, is the main characterââ¬â¢s sister-in-law and is the caretaker of the home. She is the ââ¬Å"perfect and enthusiastic housekeeper and hopes for no better professionâ⬠who serves as a substitute wife for Johnââ¬â¢s traditional family view. She is the imprisoned woman who is perfectly fine with her prison, even blaming the narratorââ¬â¢s sickness on her untraditional thinking and writing. John, who is also a flat character, is the main characterââ¬â¢s husband and is the archetype of the 19th century white male. He is a successful ââ¬Å"practical physicianâ⬠who treats his wife more like a patient than he does an equal partner. John is a representative image of the dominant sunlight, which in the story keeps the woman behind strict bars and prevents her from being free or creative. Though the narrator never explicitly tells us her name, the very end of the story says, ââ¬Å"ââ¬â¢Iââ¬â¢ve got out at last,ââ¬â¢ said I, ââ¬Ëin spite of you and Jane. And Iââ¬â¢ve pulled off most of the paper, so you canââ¬â¢t put me back! â⬠This is a clear indication to me that the narratorââ¬â¢s name is Jane, as revealed by the crazy woman (Jane) who now thinks she was the one in the wallpaper. The narrator of the story, Jane, is the main character and is a round character that is fully developed. She is representative of the woman imprisoned, unsatisf ied with being merely the submissive housekeeper. Jane is like the less dominant moon, which in the story allows the bars of the wallpaper to move and free the woman in the wallpaper from her daytime prison. We are given an insight into Janeââ¬â¢s mind and opinions through her writings in her journal. This story is told in first-person narration. However, it is not in traditional story form, but it is constructed as if we are reading the hidden journal of the Jane who is telling, us alone, all her intimate thoughts. This also allows for the time-lapse in which the story skips over weeks at a time allowing the reader to gain an understanding of what is going on without having to read mundane and unimportant details. The chronological order of the journal also lends to it appearing as if it could be an actual journal the audience is reading. Although The Yellow Wallpaper has all the components of the average fictional story such as plot, a setting, characters, and is even told in a fairly common point of view, the brilliant writing of the story combined with the unique way in which it is presented, make for an exciting story that keeps the readerââ¬â¢s attention. The story is also a deep insight into the authorââ¬â¢s world and time revealing her own personal point of view. It is this creative writing, coupled with deep meaning and veiled in captivating writing, which assures this literary work will continue to remain a hallmark of fiction. Sibling Rivalry in Jacob an Example of the Topic Literature Essays by
Sibling Rivalry in Jacob Have I loved by Katherine Paterson Clinicians and psychologists all agree that children begin to evaluate themselves at an early age by reference to their siblings and how their parents and other adults respond to them. (Leder, 1993) This method of self-evaluation gives rise to sibling rivalry which is characterised by competition, superiority and superiority complexes and self-identification problems. (Leder, 1993) Need essay sample on "Sibling Rivalry in Jacob Have I loved by Katherine Paterson" topic? We will write a custom essay sample specifically for you Proceed Katherine Paterson explores these elements of sibling rivalry in her work Jacob Have I loved. The novel takes place in the 1940s on Rass Island off the Chesapeake Bay and depicts the difficulties of Sara Louise Bradshaw who feels upstaged by her twin sister Caroline in virtually every aspect of her social and familial relations. The novel focuses on Louises struggle with self-identity and self-perception as she tries to shake herself free of her twin sisters shadow. Louises jealousy of her twin sister Caroline is such that she cannot appreciate her own qualities and focuses more on those things that she determines Caroline has taken from her. Early on Louise laments: People Usually Tell EssayLab specialists:Who wants to write paper for me?Specialists propose: Custom Essays - Easy And Quickly With Essaylab.ComWrite My Essay Online Paper Writers For Hire Best Writing Services Good Essay Writing Company From the moment Caroline was born, she snatched everyones attention all for herself. (Paterson, 1990, 18) Blinded by jealousy, Louise simply cannot see what is there. She does not perceive that her parents focus on Caroline and away from her has more to do with Carolines frail condition and Louises comparatively healthy condition. To Louise, her parents focus on Caroline is explained away by a preference for Caroline over her. This manner of self-evaluation is what psychologists and clinicians attribute to the turbulence of sibling rivalry. In her self-evaluation, Louise perceives that her parents lack of concern for her physical well-being is tantamount to a lack of love for her. Likewise she perceives that her parents attention to her twin sister is demonstrative of a greater love for her sibling. Perhaps more telling is the manner in which Louise measures herself by reference to her sister. As psychologists and clinicians explain, siblings are constants and provide a means by which children evaluate themselves by comparison. (Leder, 1993) Paterson accentuates sibling rivalry through comparison in a symbolic way. To this end she uses hands as a reference point for Louise. Louise describes Carolines hands in a way that ensures that she likens Caroline to the perfection she sees in her siblings hands: Her fingers were long and gracefully shaped as those on the disembodied hands on the ponds ad...exactly the right length to show that she was naturally gifted. (Paterson, 1990, 147) For Louise, Carolines hands represent her musical talent with respect to the piano and likewise Carolines hands symbolize her beauty, a beauty that Louise is envious of. Be that as it may, Louise also recognizes her sisters flaws, flaws that are consistent with the characteristics of sibling rivalry. The phrase exactly the right length lends itself to the suggestion that Caroline has been pampered and supported all of her life thus making her hungry for approval and rather dependant on others. By comparing Carolines hand to the disembodied hands on the ponds ad Louise is also recognizing the superficial nature of Carolines beauty. For her, Carolines beauty leaves her shallow and rather self-centred. As previously noted sibling rivalry arises out of self-perception brought on by comparing the ways that adults and parents respond to siblings. (Leder, 1993) Obviously, Carolines health has caused her parents to respond to her in a very concerned and caring way which is quite different from the way the healthy Louise was responded to. As a result, Caroline apparently developed a feeling of superiority over her sister. In turn her sister developed a feeling of inferiority with respect to her sister. Louises hands on the other hand stubbornly refused to be softened. (Paterson, 1990, 196) Louises hands are constantly rough and dirty as a result of her hard work. By contrast, Carolines hands are perfect because she does not work and benefits from her sisters hard work. It is Louises work that contributes to the funding of Carolines musical pursuits on the mainland. In this comparison of the hands of the two sisters Paterson reveals the traits that pide the sisters and contribute to the sibling rivalry between them. Carolines hands are beautiful because she only helps herself while Louises hands are rough and dirty because she helps others particularly her sister Caroline. In other words Caroline is self-centered while Louise is unselfish. Such disparity in their respective personalities provides elements of resentment between the two sisters giving way to sibling rivalry. Beauty however, is a bone of contention for Louise and provides a subtle contribution toward her sibling rivalry with her sister. Louise is self conscious and rather sensitive when it comes to her physical attributes and her fathers jibing her over it does not help to close the gap between sisters, but rather only serves to make it wider. As a result of her rough and tumble veneer her father teases her by calling her Old Scarface a comment that brings Louise to tears. (Paterson, 20) Although her father recognizes the different beauties his daughters are endowed with, Carolines physical beauty and Louises inner beauty, Louise does not recognize the distinction herself. This kind of outward response from her father, although innocent is also the catalyst for Louises self-perception which contributes to the jealousy that sews together intense sibling rivalry between herself and her sister. Psychologists and clinicians all agree that sibling rivalry does not necessarily end with childhood and can carry over to adulthood. (Leder, 1993) Paterson capitalizes on this theory through Louise who eventually finds her own self identify but continues to feel isolated from those that surround her. She continues to be weighted down by her envy of Caroline and her feelings of inadequacy resurface as an adult. She is unable to accept that the love and attention given to Caroline does not take away the love that others feel for her. Loiuses envy is not one-sided. Caroline also realizes that her sister shares a relationship with her parents on a very different level than she does. With her mother, Louise shares a bond that is founded on the desire to leave...and build a life...somewhere else. (Paterson, 1990, 227) Like her father, Louise loves the water and the benefits of working in the water. Moreover, her father only funds Carolines music school because he has more faith in Louise. As evidence of his faith in Louise her father tells her: Dont tell me no one ever gave you a chance. You dont need anything given to you. You can make your own chances. (Paterson, 1990, 217) The title of Patersons book is derived from Romans Chapter 9, verse 13 with the relevant part reading Jacob have I loved, and Esau I have hated. (Romans 9:13) This part of Romans related the story of intense sibling rivalry between twin brothers Jacob and Esau and although Louises grandmother is well aware of the differential treatment of Caroline and Louise she recites the passage to Louise. The intense sibling rivalry between Caroline and Louise is perhaps not as fierce as that between Jacob and Esau but it is obvious that Paterson wanted to create a parallel by choosing the passage from Romans 9:13 as the title for her work. Paterson seeks to explain Louises jealousy of her sister however and does so in a way that the reader is sympathetic with Louise and at the same time identifies those patterns pointed out by clinicians and psychologists. It is clear that Louise evaluates herself by reference to the manner in which her parents and others treat Caroline. The young adolescent Louise sees Caroline as beloved, admired and respected for her exceptional voice and piano skills. Perhaps another sore point for Louise is the fact that others, particularly her parents focus their attentions to creating chances for Caroline leaving Louise to her own devices. Although the treatment of Louise helps to build her strength of character and independence it also provides the catalyst for her jealousy of Caroline. Louise cannot help but resent the fact that opportunities are handed to Caroline while she must make her own opportunities. Carolines superiority complex a trend in sibling rivalry (Leder, 1993) is alluded to by Paterson in Jacob Have I Loved. For instance, Caroline fancies herself to be the ideal reflection of what a woman should be, delicate and physically beautiful. To this end she looks down upon Louise who loves the sea and working in it. Caroline sees her sister as dirty and smelly. Her grandmothers response to Carolines characterization of Louise is one of tolerance and acquiescence because like Caroline, her grandmother regards the ocean as a will and unbridled arena unsuited for a woman. This kind of a response from an adult only serves to fuel the seeds of sibling rivalry. (Leder, 1993) Louise however, breaks away from the sibling rivalry and pursues her own goals despite her grandmother and Carolines opinion. When her friend Call, a male friend who helps her father on his crabbing boats joins the navy, Louise is only too happy to take his place. Having taken herself out of her sisters shadow at last Louise notes: I was, for the first in my life, deeply content with what life was giving me. (Paterson, 1990, 187) By going out to sea with her father Louise removes herself both physically and figuratively from beneath her sisters shadow and discovers that she has an identity separate and apart from her sisters. At sea she is Louise and no longer Carolines less endowed sister. Paterson obviously believes as to psychologists and clinicians that sibling rivalry is primarily outgrown although it can resurface from time to time in adulthood.(Leder, 1993) By coming to the realization that she has her own identity separate and apart from her sister Caroline, Louise also comes to the realization that she is not required to depend on her sister for her own identity. She also develops an appreciation for her own inner beauty realizing that outer beauty is fragile and not self-defining. By coming to these realizations, Louise breaks free of her sibling rivalry with her sister. Bibliography Leder, Jane. Adult Sibling Rivalry. Psychology Today. Motion Picture Code essays
Motion Picture Code essays The economic downturns of the Great Depression contributed to the countys fascination with gangster genres. As Americans lost their jobs or saw their farms foreclosed on by the once admired establishment or banking system; with public endorsement gangsters descended in spirit from Americas frontier outlaws such as the James Gang, and led by desperadoes like Pretty Boy Floyd, Baby Face Nelson, and Machine Gun Kellyrose up to assault the system. Because of Prohibition, the Great Depression and World War II, gangsters became the modern gunslingers and outlaws. The gangster saga replaced the Western as the American myth. It told the story of modern America. Young Americans enjoyed watching gangster films during the 1930s. Before President Roosevelts New Deal, gangsters were without doubt the American cinemas most striking heroes. The film industrys love affair with members of criminal gangs was only natural, they were colorful, violent, and charismatic men and women whose law-breaking activities were followed by millions of law abiding Americans. But when brought to the screen, gangster films more than any other Hollywood genre created problems not only for the usual censorship lobbies but also for judges, lawyers, teachers, policemen, mayors, newspapers, and local councilors. Many respectable citizens believed that gangster films based on the lives and activities of Prohibition-era criminals, led to an increase in juvenile delinquency and accused Hollywood of delivering impressionable youth into a career of crime. The harmful effects of fast-moving and exciting gangster films on young cinema patrons thus became a prominent concern of those eager to control and censor this pervasive new mass medium. After a series of sex scandals rocked the American film industry, in 1922 Hollywoods Jewish moguls hired a midwestern Presbyterian gentleman and influential ...

Homogeneous Definition and Examples
Homogeneous Definition and Examples Homogeneous refers to a substance that is consistent or uniform throughout its volume. A sample taken from any part of a homogeneous substance will have the same characteristics as a sample taken from another area. Example Air is considered a homogeneous mixture of gases. Pure salt has a homogeneous composition. In a more general sense, a group of school children all dressed in the same uniform may be considered homogeneous. Antonym In contrast, the term heterogeneous refers to a substance that has an irregular composition. A mixture of apples and oranges is heterogeneous. A bucket of rocks contains a heterogeneous mixture of shapes, sizes, and composition. A group of different barnyard animals is heterogeneous. A mixture of oil and water is heterogeneous because the two liquids do not mix evenly. If a sample is taken from one part of the mixture, it may not contain equal amounts of oil and water.

Research - Essay Example Further, the model stipulates that the teachers and assessment tools are two distinct entities with no close relationship. The studentsââ¬â¢ learning ability gets measured through objective test results and assessment outcomes (Gatto 45). Notably, one of the major challenges that teachers encounter is high number of learners to attend to. This limits effective service delivery and the quality of education received by the learners. With a class of approximately 50 students particularly in developing countries, it is complex and impossible for the learners to receive one-to-one attention from their instructors. Consequently, assistance from other colleagues and research experts may be necessary. This is commonly evidenced during examinations where close attention is necessary in order to avoid instances of cheating. However, with a sample size of 50 students drawn from the entire school population, at least 10 more researchers are needed to effectively supervise the examinations. This has been evidenced in the case of Mussoorie International School where extra research assistants and instructors are needed to improve the quality of services delivered to clients. Therefore, as the class size increases, more assistants a re needed to help in executing regular academic programmes (Gatto

Explain and evaluate the Analogical Design Argument for God's Essay
Explain and evaluate the Analogical Design Argument for God's existence - Essay Example The adapting of such ways is in resemblance to the creation of human setup, its intelligence and wisdom. Due to the similarities, it is logical to say that God, who is natureââ¬â¢s author, is in some capacity similar to manââ¬â¢s mind though He has a higher capacity (Schick and Vaughn). Just like parts of a machine, the universe parts fit together perfectly to carry out various functions. The structure of an element is an example of how the analogy works; the atom is formed from sub-atomic particles. The atoms form molecules which then from an element. Just like machines that have designers, probably an engineer, the universe has its designer who is God. Paleyââ¬â¢s analogy revolves around a stone and a watch. He argues that in the situation of being asked to explain the presence of a stone, he would easily state that it had lain there forever. However, had it been a watch on the ground, it would raise more questions as how it had gotten there. The first answer will be that it has been dropped there; unlike the stone which was assumed to be always lying there. The difference in assumption is attributed to the fact that the watch has parts that have been framed assembled for a specific purpose (Schick and Vaughn). The mechanism is that the watch had a maker that exists or had existed and had made it for a specific purpose and understands its construction and design. Paleyââ¬â¢s argues that the universe resembles the watch and that every watch has a designer; hence, the universe most likely has a designer who is God. The universe was intended for a purpose and the designer had a goal that he intended to accomplish. When the designer needs a universe to attain that goal, the designer fails to be all powerful (Schick and Vaughn). The analogical design says that human artifacts are the works of an intelligent design. Moreover, the universe is similar to the human artifacts; hence, the universe is also a design of an intelligent being. Proponents of the

Nikola Tesla Essay -- biographies bio
Born in 1856 the son of an Orthodox priest in Smiljan, Croatia, Nikola Tesla had an early exposure to inventing. His mother, although unschooled, was a very intelligent woman who often created appliances that helped with home and farm responsibilities, such as a mechanical eggbeater. Young Nikola was schooled at home during his early years and later attended a school in Carlstadt, Croatia. He soon developed advanced skills such as doing calculus integrals in his head. He very deeply wanted to attend college and become an engineer, but his father wanted him to join the priesthood. When Nikola was seventeen, he caught cholera and made his father to promise that if he survived the illness that he would be allowed to go to college. Obviously, Nikola lived. At the Austrian Polytechnic School at Graz Tesla studied mechanical and electrical engineering. One day, one of his professors showed him a Gramme Dynamo that could be used as a motor and generator. Tesla looked at it and asked if the Dynamo could do away with its sparking communicators. The professor replied that it would be similar to building a perpetual motion machine. The idea of such a machine tantalized Tesla for years until one day at the age of 24 when he was living in Budapest working for the Central Telephone Exchange he had an epiphany and began making sketches that would soon develop into the world's first induction motor. After several unsuccessful jobs with German and French electrical power companies where he tried to improve their DC generators, 29-year-old Tesla came to New York City with four cents in his pocket. Nikola went to Thomas Edison with a letter of recommendation from a business associate of Edison's that read, "My Dear Edison: I k... ...aimed that he had perfected his "death beam". He died shortly after in the Hotel New Yorker, where he had been living. The next morning after Tesla died, when his nephew came to his uncle's room at the hotel, the body was gone and many of his papers were missing. Naturally, if Tesla indeed had invented anything that had to do with weaponry, the FBI would be interested. Thus, all the way up until 1952, Tesla's papers which were held on to by the government eventually made it back to his family. However, the papers having to do with the beams are still missing. Some people today believe that Tesla took that knowledge to the grave with him. Casino Gambling Should Be Available in Viet Nam
Casino Gambling Should Be Available in Viet Nam The development of casinos in Viet Nam can be feasible with the current socio-economic situation in Viet Nam. In recent days, Las Vegas Sands has a new project for the development of hi-end resort complexes in Viet Nam, one in Ho Chi Minh City and the other in Ha Noi, which would cost up to 6 billion dollars.Even though people believe the project would bring the possible social risks, Viet Nam could benefit from it in the following ways: first, it could boost tourism revenue to compete with other regional countries; second, the state budget will be remarkably increased from gambling revenue and taxes; third, it can create many jobs nationwide, in Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City in particular The complexes would consist of spa centers, exhibition centers, hotels, conference centers, restaurants, shopping malls, sports centers, theaters, museums, cinemas, and other amusement services including casinos. These hi-end resort complexes in Vietnam would be the biggest investment project from Las Vegas Sands, one of the prominent gambling U. S. groups so far, if it is licensed. The large investment plan meets with a lot of difficulties and debates from officials, scientists, and people who are worrying about the possible social impacts of the casinos on young generation. Meanwhile, George Tanasijevich, the Global Development Managing Director of Las Vegas Sands, said in an interview with VietNamNet Bridge that: ââ¬Å"Las Vegas Sands well understands a bunch of heading obstacles which it will have to face up to in case of investing in the project. Also according to Mr. George, ââ¬Å"Las Vegas Sands really wants to invest in Vietnam. We are still waiting. We are ready to answer all the questions to be raised by the government of Vietnam upon the plan, the way of doing business and about the complex tourism industry,â⬠(qtd. in VietNamNet Bridge). The first foreseeable certain socio-economic benefit that the project would bring is to attract plenty of foreign tourists from across the globe; this is a big chance to launch a more positive Viet Nam tourism image throughout the world.A lot of countries, like Singapore, Hong Kong, Cambodia, and Malaysia in Asia, have been successfully trying to create new attractive features to attract foreign travelers. Viet Nam already has diverse luxury hotels ranging from one star to five stars from the North to the South. Moreover, Viet Nam offers international standard services that make foreign tourists feel comfortable and pleased with their spending. For example, the current luxury hotel systems in Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City can offer free breakfast, snacks, friendly services, and wireless internet connection for those who have been using hotel services to appeal to more and more foreign tourists throughout the world to visit Viet Nam; this would help them feel more at home. Gambling and tourism in combination definitely would become one of the biggest services, which could draw a remarkable number of tourists from around the world if the project is available.Besides, there is also a variety of tourist spots and spectacular landscapes stretching across the country to make tourists have an interest in visiting and discovering something new. Obviously, the more visitors who come to enjoy the gambling here, the more revenue the localities where the casinos are located will generate. Specifically, in recent years, many casinos in the U. S. and Australia have been expanded for the explicit purpose of encouraging tourism development. One of these is to bring in a greater number of outsiders and additional wealth into the local economy where the casinos are located. For instance, the major casinos of the Gold Coast of Australia have been successful in attracting premium players from South East Asia. The ability to use a casino as a major stimulus for tourism development is dependent on a range of characteristics and considerations including locatio n, type of development, and the legal and competitive environment. All of these add up to a big boost in the local economy. Another benefit from gambling casinos is that the government can collect a considerable amount of revenue from taxes. Recognizably, revenue tax is the main source of income to cover all the operations of the government as well as local authorities. In addition, the local authorities and the government have to be responsible for maximizing the collection of taxes from the casinosââ¬â¢ business.Viet Nam needs to build a legal framework for gambling businesses, not only for attracting an enormous amount of foreign currency, but also for keeping the so called ââ¬Å"foreign currency bleedingâ⬠, because most foreigners bring their currency with themselves to neighbor nations, such as Singapore, Cambodia, Malaysia, or Macau when gambling at the casinos. In this case, Viet Nam must learn from Macauââ¬â¢s gambling tax policy in which taxes are not changed une xpectedly and can bring it billions of dollars each year.Wynn Resorts CEO Steve Wynn once told Gambling in Macau that he preferred the government in Macau to the one in Washington regarding Macauââ¬â¢s economy: ââ¬Å"Macau has been steady. The shocking, unexpected government is the one in Washington. Thatââ¬â¢s where we get surprises every day. Thatââ¬â¢s where taxes are changed every five minutes. Thatââ¬â¢s where you donââ¬â¢t know what to expect tomorrow. Macau is stable, but Washington is not! â⬠(qtd. in Macau Gambler Online). According to Macau Gambler Online, ââ¬Å"First-quarter gaming revenues produced by Macau's casino market is more than $9. billion, up 27 percent over 2011, a year in which the Chinese gaming enclave's 34 gambling halls had a 12-month total of $33. 5 billion. â⬠(qtd. in Macau Gambler Online). Meanwhile, Macau's Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau said in the press conference that ââ¬Å"incredible revenues from gaming reac hed $3. 12 billion during March, a 24-percent increase compared with the same period of last year. â⬠(qtd. in Macau Gambler Online). As for amazing revenues and gambling tax policy, the government has collected a great amount of tax from the casinosââ¬â¢ business.Another noteworthy example of gambling tax policy is from Singapore, one of the more stunning tourism destinations in Southeast Asia for travelers from throughout the world. Unlike Macauââ¬â¢s gambling tax policy of 39-percent rate, Singapore simply offers the amazingly gaming tax rate of 15 percent, but it taxes five more-percent rates on the so called ââ¬Å"premiumâ⬠play from high-rollers and players brought in by junkets. The close combination of two rates not only brings Singapore a large amount of money, but appeals to a huge number of foreign visitors from all over the world traveling to Singapore for vacations. In general, revenue taxes from casinos are a huge amount which can bring Viet Nam prosper ity and its people a comfortable life. They will bring huge wealth into cities to provide much needed services to the communities to which they belong. Last but not least, the presence of casinos in Viet Nam will be a big chance to create more jobs for adolescents. Currently, the world economic situation is still facing plenty of difficulties in 2012; therefore, Viet Namââ¬â¢s unemployment rate is forecast to be rising because of the negative impacts of the world economy on its economy. In this situation, the solution for the reduction of the unemployment rate which is the attraction of foreign direct investment is extremely significant. As for this, the total investment capital of up to 6 billion dollars from Las Vegas Sands to build two resort complexes including casinos is a golden opportunity for Viet Nam, not only to improve the countryââ¬â¢s economy, but to bring thousands of jobs to those who are still unemployed. Understandably, a huge amount of the work force will be e mployed for construction of the complexes.Specifically, in an exclusive interview with Vietnamnet Bridge, Sheldon Adelson, Las Vegas Sands chairman, recently estimated taking at least six months to a year to plan, then two more years for construction. The project including a variety of constructions, such as hotels, restaurants, amusement areas, fitness clubs, dancing clubs, casinos, and roads will temporarily reduce the governmentââ¬â¢s burden over dealing with the unemployment situation. A remarkable number of laborers will be employed to work in two resort complexes after two and a half years of completing the project. As an illustration, students who qualify employment requirements definitely have more chance to work in the resort complexes as an accountant, sales man, or supervisor after graduation from colleges or universities. Besides, others who are unable to qualify for academic standards can find other chances to work in the fields that require a lower-standard, such as body guards, drivers, waiters, waitresses, casino staffs. Though these jobs do not require much more skills than academic jobs, they can bring employees an impressive income. For this reason, the government generally does not have to spend its budget on solving long-term unemployment issues. Though the casino industry can bring lots of benefits to the country, it may lead to the boom of individual bankruptcy, create social evils, and increase crime rates as well. As for a developing country, like Viet Nam, gambling could be an easy and effective way to become rich for those who take advantage of loosened law and corruption. Hence, the total income of casino business may not go to the state budget as a business income tax.Truly, over the developed countries with strict law enforcement like Singapore, crimes can easily get involved in casino business. ââ¬Å"Though recognizing the recognition of casino business to the Singaporean economy, I still feel worried about the possible social impacts of the casinos,â⬠said Grace Fu, a minister of the country (qtd. in Singapore Casinos). Also, according to Samaritans of Singapore, a non-government organization in Singapore, the gambling business and the lending at exorbitant high interest rates have been constantly developing are advantage conditions for increasing crimes. The incredible profit from casino business is always directly proportional with an increase of social evils. More importantly, in order to develop casino business steadily and sustainably, the government needs to take some negative impacts and long-term consequences into consideration. The negative impacts and long-term consequences can be easily anticipated that the young generation may drop out of school early, be pathologically addicted to drugs, and commit murder or robbery. Who will be responsible for the social evils arising from the next ten-year operation of casinos though it is on the right track?According to the Florida Times Union, statis tics show crime rates will raise day-to-day. Over the countries which have casino business, the rate is probably higher than non-casino business country. ââ¬Å"The statistics are sobering. In communities that permit Class III casino gambling, such as Las Vegas-style slot machines, blackjack card games and even roulette or craps, the crime rate is nearly twice the national average,â⬠said Bill Mccollum, an attorney general, in his research (qtd. n The Florida Times Union). Additionally, statistics showed that illegal gambling was significantly more prevalent in states that have been opening the door to legalized gambling. His recent study found more than two-thirds of compulsive gamblers had engaged in criminal activity, including violent crimes, because of a gambling problem. Above all, they are practical statistics for the Viet Nam government to carefully refer before giving out a right and proper decisions and policies as well.In fact, casino business is a form of maximizing profits from the development of resort complexes which bring Viet Nam a lot of benefits in which tourism development, the state budget increase, and employment issue are essentially focal points to develop country economy. In order to attain those achievements, the government should be paying close attention to its negative impacts over a long-term period to launch a timely decision or solution aiming to minimize or stop its risks immediately.Apparently, casino gambling is the form of business in which increased revenues from taxes can be obtained from casinos. That amount can be used to improve communities, and local services, and infrastructure. The benefits of the project which can be easily collected are that more and more hotels, restaurants, transportation hubs, surrounding roads, and areas will be built and expanded to accommodate more structures. Thanks to these, the high unemployment rate can be considerably lower and lower.

How Many Elements Are in the Power Set
The power set of a set A is the collection of all subsets of A. When working with a finite set with n elements, one question that we might ask is, ââ¬Å"How many elements are there in the power set of A ?â⬠We will see that the answer to this question is 2nà and prove mathematically why this is true. Observation of the Pattern We will look for a pattern by observing the number of elements in the power set of A, where A has n elements: If A { } (the empty set), then A has no elements but P (A) { { } }, a set with one element. If A {a}, then A has one element and P (A) { { }, {a}}, a set with two elements. If A {a, b}, then A has two elements and P (A) { { }, {a}, {b}, {a,b}}, a set with two elements. In all of these situations, it is straightforward to see for setsà with a small number of elements that if there is a finite number of n elements in A, then the power set P (A) has 2n elements. But does this pattern continue? Just because a pattern is true for n 0, 1, and 2 doesnââ¬â¢t necessarily mean that the pattern is true for higher values of n. But this pattern does continue. To show that this is indeed the case, we will use proof by induction. Proof by Induction Proof by induction is useful for proving statements concerning all of the natural numbers. We achieve this in two steps. For the first step, we anchor our proof by showing a true statement for the first value of n that we wish to consider. The second step of our proof is to assume that the statement holds for n k, and the show that this implies the statement holds for n k 1. Another Observation To help in our proof, we will need another observation. From the examples above, we can see that P({a}) is a subset of P({a, b}). The subsets of {a} form exactly half of the subsets of {a, b}. We can obtain all of the subsets of {a, b} by adding the element b to each of the subsets of {a}. This set addition is accomplished by means of the set operation of union: Empty Set U {b} {b}{a} U {b} {a, b} These are the two new elements in P({a, b}) that were not elements of P({a}). We see a similar occurrence for P({a, b, c}). We start with the four sets of P({a, b}), and to each of these we add the element c: Empty Set U {c} {c}{a} U {c} {a, c}{b} U {c} {b, c}{a, b} U {c} {a, b, c} And so we end up with a total of eight elements in P({a, b, c}). The Proof We are now ready to prove the statement, ââ¬Å"If the set A contains n elements, then the power set P( A) has 2n elements.â⬠We begin by noting that the proof by induction has already been anchored for the cases n 0, 1, 2 and 3. We suppose by induction that the statement holds for k. Now let the set A contain n 1 elements. We can write A B U {x}, and consider how to form subsets of A. We take all elements of P(B), and by the inductive hypothesis, there are 2n of these. Then we add the element x to each of these subsets of B, resulting in another 2n subsets of B. This exhausts the list of subsets of B, and so the total is 2n 2n 2(2n) 2n 1 elements of the power set of A.
